Los Angeles, CA – emerging writer and award winning performer, Dulce Maria Solis stars in the intimate theatrical biography CHELA, running at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in June 2011. Based on her mothers’ real life story, Solis takes a dark comedic spin on her portrayal of a young CHELA in the midst of a life of chaos. CHELA runs at the Hollywood Fringe Festival on Fridays and Saturdays, June 10 & 11, 17 & 18, 24 & 25. All performances are at 7:30 PM in the Dorie Theatre at The Complex, 6476 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood, California. Tickets $15 or 2-for-$20 using code “two for” at www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/331.

CHELA, written and performed by Dulce Maria Solis, is a dynamic, one-woman, multimedia, theatrical piece based on a true story of love, lunacy, and domestic violence. This original story, told from her mother’s point of view, follows CHELA from Mexico to America, from martyrdom to self-worth, and from ignorance to self-discovery. As we ride the seemingly illogical and unreasonable ways in which CHELA reacts and copes with these ongoing transitions in her life, we witness one woman’s insurmountable challenge to find love and a life worth living for, in spite of her-self.

Dulce Maria Solis’ last performance of CHELA sold out at the California State University of San Marcos. She also *won Outstanding Female Performance at the Actor’s Alliance Festival at the Lyceum Space in San Diego. CHELA’s production history also includes: Frida Kahlo Theater, CASA 0101 and the Santa Monica Playhouse in Los Angeles, Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego, and at the Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) in Houston, Texas.

CHELA is headed next to New York City, having been selected from over 800 submissions to appear at the New York International Fringe festival this August.

The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an annual celebration of the emerging arts. Environments for the Fringe include both traditional and unorthodox venues. Performances are self-produced by local, national, and international arts companies and independent performers.
