A recent NBC News report revealed that millennial Latinas with bachelor’s and graduate degrees grew by over 70% in the past two decades. This statistic alone showcases the weight education holds for the Latine community and the huge strides they’re taking to climb the socio-economic ladder in the United States. In Estrawbery Fields Forever, La Graduada, unpacks what “an education” means to each of her family members. She is grappling with the current state of student loan debt she’s in and the immense debt she’s in with her family who sacrificed so much for her. . Through poetry, this piece explores immigrant family dynamics, the financial impact of higher education on first-generation students, and the psychological toll of the American Dream.

Verenice Zuniga and Katherine Arevalo met at UC Santa Barbara where they both bonded over their commitment to diverse storytelling and the power it has to change the way marginalized communities are seen.
