Music and Lyrics by Tom Lehrer

In The Layers of Tom Lehrer, comedian Allan Murray portrays Tom and brings his songs to life. As a lifelong fan, Allan conceived the idea of a one man show and called the now 93-year-old mysterious maestro Tom Lehrer himself to share his idea. His call went straight to Tom’s answering machine which wasn’t surprising as he famously doesn’t answer calls. As Allan was leaving a message detailing the show, however, Tom suddenly picked up the phone. After a few great conversations, Tom gave Allan his blessing. Tom’s satirical songs are just as relevant today as they were in the 50s and 60s. Allan is thrilled to not only bring you the music of Tom Lehrer, but his story as well!

About the Show:
In the 50s & 60s, during the Cold War nuclear panic, mathematician TOM LEHRER became an international, comedy sensation. He sang twisted tunes & satirized war, pornography, race, kink, death, religion, the environment, education & politics. With a side order of “Elements” of course. Tom was listed in the same TIME magazine article along with his cohort LENNY BRUCE about a new type of comedian, the SICKNIK.
He inspired the likes of Bo Burnham, Flight of the Conchords, and “Weird Al” to name a few.
Comedian and actor ALLAN MURRAY tickles the ivories and brings TOM and his acid-tinged ditties to life.

“Tom’s brilliance has inspired hero worship among several generations of fans of satire & funny music.”
-“Weird Al” Yankovic
