NOTHING IS COOL

Nothing is Cool

view project

Nothing is Cool is based on my experiences playing indie rock in New York City for over ten years. My band “the iOs” was signed to Kanine Records and released the album “In Sunday Songs” in 2006.

In 2008 the band broke up and I decided to put my thoughts on the indie rock scene to film. The premise started by creating the coolest and most shallow band ever. Something sure to be popular…at least for the next 20 minutes. A “Spinal Tap with hipsters” if you will.

I came up with the names “The Moustache Bravado” and “The Vintage Wife Beaters” and put all my unthinkable and evil plans for band success to use. They would have an attractive girl that doesn’t play an instrument. They would only sing in Japanese. They would hire a David Bowie impersonator to come to shows so blogs would write about them!

The film was shot on a shoe string budget with the aim of making it look like a hipster polaroid come to life. Using one home-depot bought construction light and a 7D, we achieved the perfect look. I wrote and recorded the music for the band with as little thought as possible, hoping to achieve a raw and fresh feel. For the “good music” in the film, I had a vast reservoir of material from my contact with other bands, most of whom had incredible songs that no one had heard before. Ultimately this movie is my love letter to all the great undiscovered music I came across during my time in the indie scene.
