“New Orleans throughout its history had, according to many noted authorities on the subject, just about the largest and most organized Red Light District in the Western hemisphere. There were all sorts of establishments rigged up and operated for men on the prowl in search of flesh and pleasure, from the most elegant and palatial mansions to the most bare and decrepit cribs.”– Danny Barker
Join New Orleans’s own musician/performer Esquizito as he conjures up the notorious characters of “The District” in an adaptation of a Danny Barker (1909-1994) tale from The Last Days of Storyville. Interpreting Barker’s "lies embellished with truth,” Esquizito makes New Orleans’ red light district and the birth of Jazz come to life.
Barker, a musical/Jazz legend in his own time who lately has been receiving some deserved but very belated scrutiny, was, by all accounts, one-of-a-kind.
“Beyond his varied career in popular American music, Danny Barker was a self-styled artist who viewed “Jazz” in a broad cultural, economic, and social context. For him, Jazz was a distinctive manner of expression which is inherently reflected in virtually every aspect of black lives in America. I consider this opportunity to perform ‘Clark Wade’ at Fringe Hollywood an honor and a responsibility,” said Esquizito.
The 75-minute performance is Esquizito’s Hollywood Fringe debut. He is a New Orleans son who enjoys a distinctive life in Jazz. “Esquizito is a mix of modern jazz vocals, New Orleans street character, traditional jazz and gospel, and a healthy dab of bohemian zaniness. Just Crazy. Wild.”  – Kalamu ya Salaam
