Prufrock Productions presents the world premiere of
“Marty has Cancer”
by Austin Archer

Salt Lake City— Prufrock Productions presents the world premiere of “Marty has Cancer” at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, running June 23 and 24, 2018.

Synopsis: Choi and Rhoul haven’t seen Marty in a while. Then, over coffee and a stale muffin, he casually tells them he has cancer. And he wants to move to Hawaii. “Marty has Cancer” is a dark comedy about friendship, coming-of-age (in your 30’s), and the absurdity of “American Idol.”

Playwright Austin Archer said of the play, “I wanted to write a buddy comedy about death and disease that Annie Baker would admire. Something unsentimental, but full of care and heart and truth. I think I did that. It’s a comedy about real life, and the forces outside our control that dictate our experience.”

“I didn’t intend for it to get as personal as it did,” he added. “In fact, I think it became one of the most personal things I’ve ever written.”

“Marty has Cancer” will move to Utah in August to be performed at the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival.

Los Angeles-based actors Jess Kellner, Sean Sekino, Dylan Stretchbery and Marza Warsinske constitute the production’s cast. Out of Salt Lake City, Madeleine Gail Rex directs.

Jess Kellner (Rhoul) moved to Los Angeles after working and training in New York City. Regionally, he appeared in Pioneer Theatre Company’s “A Few Good Men,” and most recently, he was cast alongside Adrien Brody and Joan Allen in the documentary “Who Will Write Our History.”

Sean Sekino (Choi) is a theatre, TV, film and commercial actor. His recent credits include “Grey’s Anatomy,” “American Vandal” and “General Hospital.” On stage, he has appeared in “Aida,” “Company,” “Godspell,” “Urinetown,” “Pirates of Penzance” and others. His film, “Goodbye, My Big Cat,” premiered at the Seattle Intl. Film Festival.

Dylan Stretchbery (Marty) is an actor and improviser, having appeared as Jack Flan in “Abundance,” Shahryar in “The Arabian Nights” and Boris Alexeyevich Trigorin “The Seagull.” He is a recent recipient of the Best Web Series award at the Blackbird Film Festival, for “Karmic.” Stretchbery is a member of the improv team, Free Puppies.

Marza Warsinske (Amber) has appeared on stage, in film and in web series. Select roles include Vanda in “Venus in Fur,” Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady” and Isabel in the new musical “300 Bones,” which she originated. Warsinske produces the web series “Marza vs the Internet” and the experimental comedy/mystery podcast “Bailey Was Cursed by a Witch.” She is also a regular performer with Broadway LA: Unplugged.

Austin Archer (Playwright) is a freelance actor, director, choreographer and playwright. His play “Jump” received its sold-out world premiere at Plan-B Theatre Company in Salt Lake City this spring. He most recently appeared on stage at Salt Lake Acting Company in their production of Taylor Mac’s “Hir" and has performed for television in “Mindhunter” (Netflix) and “Blood and Oil” (ABC). His directing/choreography credits include “In the Heights” and “American Idiot” (Good Company Theatre), among others.

Madeleine Gail Rex (Director) is the founder of Prufrock Productions and works in publicity at Pioneer Theatre Company. Her credits include the rolling premiere of “Red Bike” by Caridad Svich, Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” and an upcoming Great Salt Lake Fringe play with The TwoFifteen Project. In 2012, she worked with Black Swan Youth Theatre out of Portland, Ore. to bring an all-youth version of “The Importance of Being Earnest” to the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
