HOLLYWOOD, CA (April 14, 2017) – A team of young women hope to introduce a new style of theatre to Los Angeles at this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival with a new play titled This Our Now. The show explores modern and relevant themes, from online dating to racially-charged terrorist attacks, using a new and intriguing British theatre style. There are six performances in the month of June at the Stephanie Feury Studio Theatre, with the press preview on Sunday, June 4th, at 6 pm.

The show, which was workshopped by students at USC this spring, was written in the United Kingdom by the young, award-winning playwright Olivia Cordell. The script, which has been described as ‘hyperminimalistic’, includes no stage direction, no scene breaks, and no character names. This style of theatre has taken the London arts scene by storm, appearing everywhere from fringe venues to the West End.

“We’re so excited to bring this fresh style of theatre to Los Angeles from London,” said director Aubrey Rinehart, “After seeing the kind of creative collaboration happening in the U.K., we want to shake up the theatre scene in Los Angeles. It’s like nothing you’ve seen here before.”

Director Aubrey Rinehart studied British theatre alongside assistant director Kimia Yazdi and playwright Olivia Cordell at the British American Drama Academy last year. They were all inspired by the level of artistic collaboration that is popular in modern British theatre, and decided to bring the style home with them after their studies concluded. These women make up the core of the production team, which strives to promote the work and collaboration of female theatre artists here in L.A.

This Our Now tells two more-or-less modern love stories: Four characters fall in love, fall apart, and fail to connect in this thoroughly millennial exploration of defense mechanisms. The characters are the archetypes of young people today: They simultaneously hope for the future and fear it, while trying to build lives in a world where nothing is certain – even themselves.
