Hollywood, CA – Laura House’s original, one-woman comedy show How to Hate Yourself makes its world premiere with a limited engagement at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, June 5, 2015. How to Hate Yourself, written and performed by comedian and seasoned television writer Laura House (Mom, Samantha Who), traces her quest for fulfillment in all the wrong places.

The 50-minute show is based on House’s web series in which she plays “an internationally renown self-help/self-hate coach” who shows the audience how to hate yourself “more deeply than you ever thought possible.” With an absurd stance, the show satirically pokes fun at the self-help industry. House teaches the audience methods to hate yourself, such as “Make a list of everyone who’s better than you” and “Create a Resentment Box.” Some of her techniques hit close to home in modern times, such as “Look at other people on Facebook having more fun than you! They live better!”

How to Hate Yourself weaves House’s high-energy “self-hate coaching” lessons with her own more grounded persona and life story. She reveals her funny, yet heart-breaking story of being adopted and obsession to find her birth mother in order to fill a deep inner emotional void. House is a hilarious, vulnerable and truly engaging storyteller, showcasing her highs, lows and recovery, including being the star of the MTV show (Austin Stories), undertaking a three-month meditation retreat in India, learning to be a raw food chef in Bali and battling depression and alcoholism.

“If we do work to love ourselves, but we still hear an inner voice of doubt and fear, we start to wonder if maybe that voice is right. We all have a bit of self-doubt in us, and this show shines light on that deep-dark voice in an honest, humorous way,” says House.

How to Hate Yourself is directed by Craig Anton (Mad Men, Mr. Show).
