Cleveland Playwright Rolls the Dice for Hollywood World Premiere

Bryna Olympia, a Cleveland resident and aspiring playwright, has entered two of her plays in the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival this June. The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community. The Hollywood neighborhood hosts hundreds of productions by local, national, and international arts companies and independent performers in traditional theaters, cabarets, churches and parks. A completely open and uncensored approach also serves the mission of the festival of allowing the arts to flourish with no barriers. Additionally, by creating an environment where artists must self-produce their work, the Fringe motivates its participants to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurialism in the arts.

And so the Cleveland cast and crew of L.A. Lyles, Nick Yurick, Lisa Margevicius, Shirlenia Hill, Nick Wapperrer, along with their playwright/ director, Bryna Olympia, will be winging their way to sunny California for 5 performances in 4 days, June 18-21, for the world premiere of 4D6 Life, a play about racism in a role playing fantasy world.

4D6 Life was originally inspired by the Fergus riots as well as the racial upheaval in Cleveland and Baltimore. In it the play tries to tackle the sensitive subject of racism, learned prejudices, and religious intolerance. 4D6 Life is a play about expectations, diversity, fortitude, and life choices. It is a world where character traits are determined by a roll of a dice and pre-written prejudices.

Some of the characters in the play are created by puppets. The entire cast and crew attended a three day workshop on puppeteering and puppet creation in April in New York City with International recognized Puppet School. Using puppets helps keep the cast size smaller, adds the fantasy aspect of role playing words as well as having the unique capacity to communicate ideas that humans can’t get away with saying.

Hailing from a strong theatre background, Ms. Olympia started the non-profit organization, Creative Dream Collaboration (CDC) Dramatics, in the hopes of helping other artists follow their dreams and to encourage participation at International Fringe Festivals. Besides 4D6 Life, “Kink” a play of misconceptions and generalizations based on appearances written by Ms. Olympia, will also be presented at the Hollywood festival, having premiered earlier in Reno, Nevada. Following the Festival’s goals of creating self produced works, these two plays can benefit from the community’s support through sponsorship, donation or even purchasing a ticket to be donated to a student or starving artist attending the Festival. Information about CDC Dramatics and how one can become a supporter is available at www.cdcdramatics.org
