With all my life to live, my thoughts turn fugitive…

May 17, 2015…Hollywood, CA…2CENTS THEATRE is thrilled to present the West Coast Premiere of FUGITIVE SONGS, music by Chris Miller & lyrics by Nathan Tysen (Upcoming Broadway production of Tuck Everlasting, The Burnt Part Boys), musical direction by Joshua Kranz and directed by Kristen Boulé. FUGITIVE SONGS will open Friday, June 5 at the THREE CLUBS, 1123 Vine Street in Hollywood as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

So many reasons to RUN! Fugitive Songs follows six troubled wanderers through their unique 19-song journeys across America. Matt is in and out of trouble, and finally seeking help. But a broken past keeps driving him deeper… Barrett, unable to handle a choice she’s made, runs away, into the mountains. Gavin runs, leaving a lifetime of struggle. But the further he gets from where he’s running from, the more his path points towards home. Joshua drowns his sorrows as he longs to escape his disillusioned life in NYC, and to Shine. Alysha’s spends her life ignoring home, until home is turned upside down. Karen can no longer be who she’s told… it’s time for daddy’s little girl to get a little lost, so she can be found. This innovative half-musical/half-hootenanny finds hope and beauty in what is past and what lies ahead. Blending traditional folk music with contemporary pop and gospel, Fugitive Songs offers a new sound for a restless America.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM

CHRIS MILLER (music) and NATHAN TYSEN (lyrics) have written The Burnt Part Boys (2010 Lucille Lortel Nomination, Best Musical) and Fugitive Songs (2008 Drama Desk Award Nomination, Outstanding Revue), both of which have cast albums available on Yellow Sound Label. Current projects include the Broadway-bound adaptation of the popular novel Tuck Everlasting (Direction by Casey Nicholaw, Book by Claudia Shear), a song for the new revue Stars of David, plus commissions from Lincoln Center Theater and Playwrights Horizons/Theatreworks Silicon Valley. Television work includes songs for Sesame Street (2012 Daytime Emmy Award) and The Electric Company. Other projects include two circuses for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey, and an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Boston Globe Top Ten Pick of 2008). Chris and Nathan apply for many awards and grants, and sometimes even win (Thank you Fred Ebb, Ed Kleban, Jonathan Larson, Richard Rodgers, Daryl Roth, Kitty Carlisle Hart, ASCAP, and the NEA). They began their collaboration together at NYU where they received their MFA’s in musical theatre writing.

KRISTEN BOULÉ (Director) is the Founding Artistic Director of 2Cents Theatre Group. She directs many of their mainstage productions, including last year’s RENT which earned her a nomination for Best Director from the NAACP Theatre Awards. She also produces their annual Acting Out INK Fest, a 3-day Festival of female playwrights. INK 2015 (which took place in April at the Hudson Theatres) featured 21 plays, 19 female playwrights, 19 directors and over 50 actors. She couldn’t be more proud of this exciting journey that is Fugitive Songs, or more grateful for the opportunity to explore it. Boulé’s own unique musical Dreams in Variation began this journey into LA theatre several years ago, and now with 2Cents she plans to continue to develop a unique community for artists with constant opportunity to create and explore.

The CAST of FUGITIVE SONGS features: Tiffany Asta, Katy Harvey, Jessica J’aime, Michael Levine, Juan Lozano, and Reagan Osborne.

FUGITIVE SONGS features a live 5-piece acoustic band and a totally immersive experience.

2Cents Theatre Group was founded in 2012 by Kristen Boulé (Artistic Director), Kate Bowman (VP of Creative Affairs), Tiffany Roberts (Literary Director), Cody Lyman (Secretary), Lisette Azar, and Marlio Sterling (Exec Board), all artists with varied areas of discipline, who shared a passion for great ART. 2Cents’ mission is to inspire audiences with great storytelling injected with their own 2Cents, making their ART fearlessly unique. This began with a critically acclaimed, artistically expanded production of Jason Robert Brown’s “The Last Five Years”, worked around the unexpected element of two dancers seen in shadow, representing past memories. Next, 2Cents took on an epically intimate and award-winning (NAACP) production of Jonathan Larson’s “RENT”, paired in rep with Steven Dietz’s “Private Eyes,” followed by their immersively interactive “Rocky Horror Experience” at The Dragonfly in Hollywood. Los Angeles critics consistently remark at 2Cents’ daring originality while managing to respect the authentic story of whatever piece they’re taking on. In 2014 2Cents produced their first annual Acting Out INK Fest, featuring 22 plays over one 3-day weekend, all written by women. INK Fest, involving over 100 actors, directors and other artists, and inspired by 2Cents’ non-profit partnership with LA Women’s Theatre Project, is an annual event continuing to honor female writers. 2Cents is also continuing to expand its outreach program. Most recently, they paired with supportive housing organizations PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) and Skid Row Housing for multiple Christmas Caroling apperances over the Holiday Season, and spent time with KidWorks in the South Bay, holding theatre workshops for underprivileged kids. In 2013 they performed at an AIDS Benefit with Being Alive in West Hollywood, and participated in “Relay for Life,” an American Cancer Society Relay Event in Venice, CA. Visit www.2centstheatre.com for more information, or to make a tax-deductible donation. And “like” 2Cents on Facebook and follow us on Instagram! See you at the SHOWS and enjoy the ART!
