Eleanor’s Story is an adaptation of the autobiography of Eleanor Ramrath Garner’s youth, growing up as an American girl caught in World War II Berlin.

A TRUE TALE OF AN AMERICAN GIRL TRAPPED IN NAZI GERMANY
In the fall of 1939, at 9 years old, Eleanor and her family left New York on the SS Hamburg bound for Germany. A new job and a secure financial future awaited her father in Berlin. Half-way across the Atlantic, Hitler declared war on Poland and return to America became impossible.

This is the true story of Eleanor Ramrath Garner growing up as an American in
Nazi Germany during WWII. Adapted for the stage, her award-winning autobiography
details her youth struggling to maintain stability, hope, and identity in a world
of terror and contrasts. Her family faces hunger, Gestapo threats, carpet bomb-
ing, the final fierce battle for Berlin, the Russian invasion and the terrors of
Soviet occupancy. The play will expose audiences to an entirely unique story
about the horrors of war and help them to understand that every casualty of war
is a person, not a number.

A LABOR OF LOVE
Ingrid Garner grew up hearing her grandmother Eleanor’s stories, and as a teen
she read Eleanor’s award-winning Autobiography of her years spent as a 9 to 16
year-old American girl living in Germany during the entirety of World War II:
surviving both Nazi opression and the Russian Occupation in Berlin.
So it was a natural choice, as Ingrid received her Bachelor’s Degree in Drama from Cal State Fullerton, to choose Eleanor’s Story to be her first foray into playwriting and world-touring a one-woman show. Ingrid spent hours conversing with Eleanor, who still lives in Southern California, to gain further insight into the events from the book, and to get a deeper understanding of Eleanor’s emotions at the time, including the culture-shock and post-traumatic stress of returning to the U.S. after the war ended. Ingrid Garner has created an vivid and riveting hour-long journey, to give us a glimpse of a unique perspective of the Second World War.
