TELENOVELA WIVES OF PANCHO VILLAUNLEASHES SPOUSES AND LOVERS
OF MEXICAN REVOLUTION HERO

Historic And Histrionic New Play Premieres At Hollywood Fringe Festival June 20

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Pancho Villa, the hero of the Mexican Revolution, rides again — but this time the battlefield is his own bedroom. That’s the premise of the satirical new play “Telenovela Wives of Pancho Villa,” which makes its world premiere at this month’s Hollywood Fringe Festival (http://www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/1633).

Written by Jeffery Atik and directed by Kenneth Rudnicki, “Telenovela Wives of Pancho Villa” reveals the revolutionary’s many wives feuding and scheming in the distinctive style of Mexican soap operas (though entirely in English). Performances take place at the Schkapf mainstage (6567 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90038):

• Friday June 20 at 7pm
• Sunday June 22 at 7pm
• Wednesday June 25 at 5:30pm
• Friday June 27 at 7pm
• Saturday June 28 at 7pm

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online. Due to racy subject matter, patrons must be at least 16 years old.

The diverse cast includes Steven Amendola, Tiago Ferreira, David Frank, Linda Landeros, Achilles Molina (as Pancho Villa), Katrina Nelson, Isadora O’Boto, Heather Pasternak, Marta Portillo, Paula Rebelo, Bo Roberts, Kazandra Santana, and Lexi Tess.

“The greed, the lust, the violence — it’s all there,” says playwright Atik, who spent many hours watching actual telenovelas to capture the genre’s histrionic feel. “Pancho is a distant papi, Doña Luz is his forever first wife, and María serves all. Let’s just say desperate schemes are normal behavior.”

The play is produced by the theatrical company Portable Currency, whose members include Atik, Rudnicki, Mitchell Colley, and Cynthia Mance.

The Hollywood Fringe Festival (http://www.hollywoodfringe.org) is an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community. This year’s festival runs from June 12-29.
