DOC AND STUMPY'S INSTANT BURLESQUE BRINGS BACK CLASSIC BURLESQUE COMEDY

Doc and Stumpys Instant Burlesque

view project

Doc & Stumpy are the premier baggy pants comedy duo of Los Angeles, reviving classic burlesque and vaudeville style comedy for the fans of today. Andrew “Doc” Davis is the quintessential straight man, while David “Stumpy” Springhorn is unmistakable as the comic.

At the Fringe Festival this year, Doc & Stumpy are presenting ten one-hour shows featuring routines developed for Monday Night Tease in Hollywood, Baggy Pants Burlesque in North Hollywood, Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas and Moisture Festival in Seattle. Each night the shows highlight some of the hottest burlesque strip-tease artists of Los Angeles. Different dancers will be joining them each night.

“Doc” – the smart one – comes by his nickname legitimately. He is one of the nation’s leading experts on American popular entertainments. He holds a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation on burlesque comedy. Published in 2011 by Palgrave Macmillan, Baggy Pants Comedy: Burlesque and the Oral Tradition won the prestigious CHOICE Award from the American Library Association as an Outstanding Academic Text of 2012. It has recently come out in paperback.

“Stumpy” – the talented one – performed for many years at Universal Studios impersonating W. C. Fields and other dead comedians. He’s been a leading performer and show producer at the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire.

They are joined onstage by Michael “Tuba” Heatherton, a former Ringling Bros. clown, who is the troupe’s “second banana;” “Mad Dog” Delaney playing drums and bit parts, along with two “talking ladies,” Ms Angie Cakes and Glama Sutra. When not performing in burlesque Glama Sutra can be found playing Shakespeare roles, under the name Cynthia Beckert. Various guest performers will be joining them onstage during their run at the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Doc & Stumpy’s Instant Burlesque is an experiment in bringing back traditional routines to a new public. Some are well-known classics, like the adaptation of Abbott & Costello’s “Who’s On First” or “Niagara Falls (Slowly I Turned),” a piece performed by the Three Stooges, Lucille Ball, and Abbott & Costello, among others.

Doc & Stumpy’s Instant Burlesque will be performed at the Schkapf Theatre, 6567 Santa Monica Blvd. Unless indicated, all shows are at 9:30 PM: they’re scheduled to perform on Friday, June 6; Saturday, June 7; Friday, June 13; Sunday, June 15 (6:30 PM), Friday, June 20; Saturday, June 21; Sunday, June 22; Wednesday, June 25 (10:15 PM); Friday, June 27; and Saturday, June 28. With different dancers and comedy bits rotated through the show, each performance is different, so there are reasons to return. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased through the Hollywood Fringe Festival website. http://www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/1778 or at the Box Office.
