Rabbits2U Productions presents their second show for the Hollywood Fringe Festival, the premier of “The Pens Shall Have Their Day,” a dark comedy by emerging playwright Lesley Gouger.

The story follows the life of Alfred (Brian Allman), a playwright in declining health, whose inner Muse, Anima (Mary Rachel Gardner), will stop at nothing to keep his pen on the page. With his wife having recently left, his written world has become a rich and fantastic escape from the harsh reality he is facing, that is, when he actually musters up the strength to write. He tries to navigate the tumultuous waters of his depression with the aid of drugs and alcohol. As he does so, his bizarre inner world begins to leak into his bleak real life interactions, causing both hilarious misunderstandings and tragic folly.

“The Pens Shall Have Their Day” is a surreal peek into the turbulent life of the writer and artist. Lesley Gouger (the director, writer and producer of this show) originally wrote this piece for her Master’s thesis in English through CSUN-Northridge. The play is a quirky tribute to her lifelong love affair with T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. But you don’t have to be a poetry lover to appreciate this show. As with all Rabbits2U Productions, this project aims to have something for everyone. And indeed it does.

A true ensemble show, “The Pens Shall Have Their Day” is both experimental and charming. With a doohickey song, a talking dog, the ever-recognizable LA Valley girl shop clerk, and a whole lot of weed, Rabbits2U brings another exciting piece to the Los Angeles stage. This production will leave you with sore cheeks and lingering conversations sure to last till next year’s Fringe Festival.

And more importantly, they do all this with quality performances from highly skilled Los Angeles actors, including: Brian Allman (UCLA grad, Actors’ Gang, ComedySportz, Janky X-Mas show with the Bootleg), Mary Rachel Gardner (USC grad, Zombie Underground, LA Connection Improv), Jennie Sheffield (Actors’ Gang, Theatre of NOTE, Groundlings), JR Esposito (Sacred Fools Theatre, “Serial Killers”), Joshua Zeller (Actors’ Gang, Bootleg, Madcaps of Science), and Mark Bommarito (Theatre Director at Sacred Heart-Flintridge Academy, ComedySportz).
