Grandmothers of the Universe was sparked partially by the actor’s frustration with affirmative action forms that ask for cultural and ethnic identity and then say “check one.” “Check one” does not describe most of the population of United States. Grandmothers of the Universe (GMU) follows one woman’s journey as she explores the ways in which her ancestry, her multiculturalism, makes her a truly diverse individual.

The main character, Miri, has been asked to speak at a conference on the topic of being an African American woman. She begins by explaining that the answer to that question can only be explained by sharing the songs, stories and poetry of her ancestral Grandmothers. Throughout the course of the play she embodies the energies of her grandmothers from her Native American, African American, Yemenite, and European ancestry. Also in the character line-up is an appearance by Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, and Sarah, a young girl who, as it turns out, is Miri’s granddaughter. Sarah brings the story full circle.
