The Mayor's Debate of Tranquility, Nebraska

kelley pierre · July 12, 2019 certified reviewer
Jim Hanna's "The Mayor's Debate of Tranquility, Nebraska" takes a concentrated, smart and undeniably hilarious look at our political habits. But while most plays of this nature use the story to react to our current political situation, Hanna removes the corrupt underbelly altogether and replaces it with something much more immediate and far more magically sinister- turning this political play into an abstract mind f**ck of an experience. ... full review

Come On Down

Oh this was fun. Lucas Alifano had me by the heartstrings the moment he stepped onstage as our almighty creator. A rockstar cast. Delightful premise. A knock-out comedy from start to finish. ... full review

SON OF A BITCH

This fringe season has had a lot of wonderfully wacky, out-of-this-world productions- but then along comes this political-realism piece that just blows you out of the water. Lucy Gillespie's pulls us through our own history in a way that doesn't spoon feed us a particular message but rather puts us in the room of the beginnings of the smear campaign ads and our now hopelessly entwined experience of media and politics. ... full review

Vote for MURDER!

So I happen to be OBSESSED with "Clue The Movie" and "Vote For Murder's" High school twist on these color-coded characters basically made my dreams come true. I entered the show feeling a little tired and a little unwilling to play, but within five minutes of the experience- I was running around like a mad woman. So. Damn. Fun. ... full review

Lincoln 2020

Lincoln 2020 is a wildly entertaining piece of poignant theatre. The structure does lend itself more to film than stage but usually that results in losing our attention or taking us out of the piece- and I was all in for the entire ride! Holiday Kinard peppers in these wonderful little moments that give us worlds of backstory in a single sentence, elevating this outrageous comedy to something unexpectedly heartfelt.... full review

Orangutan

This show is a one-woman piece of art. Tinks Lovelace's direction uses tasteful simplicity to swallow the entire theater in Mary Anne's world- and if you are familiar with the Broadwater Black Box you know that is no simple feat! Kristina Mueller's performance keeps us riveted to the journey, from her fabulous character transformations to Mrs. Trump's memorizing habit of interrupting her current thought with the next one. With so few elements of spectacle, Kristina Mueller keeps our undivided att... full review

REVENGE OF THE ROOTBEER: The Sequel To Night Of The Rootbeer

Look. I don't know what happened. And I couldn't hear ANY of the actors over my own screams of laughter- I mean pain. Excruciating pain. If you didn't know what was going on for "Night of The Rootbeer" prepare to punch a mirror over it's Revenge.... full review

Earth To Karen

My God, this is how you do a fringe musical. Guy Picot's direction uses minimalist set pieces and crazy-quick costume changes not only in perfect service of this story, but in a way that adds to it's humor and the show's overall charm. Next-leveled by Sarah Kruger's choreography, "Earth To Karen" is an unexpected delight of visual storytelling. Each cast member is just fabulous in their role and with Zachary Bernstein's gift for turn of phrase and modern storytelling, this show is nothing but tal... full review

I need more opportunities to see Matt Ritchey onstage. He's got this voguing-esk timing coupled with a deeply truthful and reactive stage presence. This ridiculous one-man-epic-fail seamlessly speaks to a number of deep rooted emotional experiences in the fringe community. Also, Jim Niedzialkowski?? Come on. So great.... full review
