What a fun foray into Christmas in June. I was surprised and delighted by this mash up of Hamlet and a Christmas Carol. ... full review

BEFORE A FALL

I really enjoyed this piece. The play is primarily set in a courtroom with several flashbacks that puts the audience at specific events as the story pans out. The clever storytelling keeps you guessing at what has actually transpired until it climactically explodes in a moment of terror. The acting was superb- characters were multi layered, horrible, wonderful, and terrific. A true gothic tale of flawed characters in a flawed world. My only critique of this piece was the excessive use... full review

A Man of No Importance

"A Man of No Importance" is a love story; love for Art, love for family, love for friends, romantic love, and love for self. I didn't know what to expect going in. I specifically went to see a friend of mine perform, and was pleasantly surprised by the story. While the story isn't necessarily original, there are plot points that stray from typical love triangle dramas. Especially in the social dialogue if today, this comedic drama touches on some very important issues and the company tells the st... full review

The Real Housekeepers of Studio City

"The Real Housekeepers of Beverly Hills" is a hoot. My wife and I saw the 11:30 performance last Friday and we really enjoyed it. The songs are fun, acting was great, characters were instantly recognizable and hilarious. Special kudos to Gabby Sinalitro's "Consuela" who had me in tears with her unshakable deadpan. There is nothing heavy in this show. It is pure fun and fluff and a great respite from many of the more serious shows here at Fringe. Don't get me wrong- I love serious theatre- but... full review

BOBBYWOOD: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BOBBY THE BELLBOY?

jerry chappell · June 23, 2013 certified reviewer
Despite the fact that there were many television references that I was unfamiliar with. I really liked this show. Bill Ratner has the perfect "Hollywood" announcer voice which seamlessly slides into and out of new characters throughout this story if his own first encounter with his once famous uncle. The story is compelling and leaves you wanting to know more about Mr. Ratners family. While my generation might not be as familiar with the backstory and history of the golden age if television, ... full review

White Trash Wedding and a Funeral

I was not really loving this show. I am not easily offended- however I did grow up in the south- and they managed to capture every possible southern stereotype in some very strong, and a few weak performances. I give them kudos for fearless execution- everybody gave themselves fully to these characters (not that there is really any depth within these characters) and the opening announcement was cleverly executed and for me the highlight of the show. Over all- the script is sloppy at best.... full review

I Wish My Life Was An RPG

jerry chappell · June 19, 2013 uncertified reviewer
This was an interesting piece for me. There were fantastic moments created through movement, dialogue, and utilization of sound. While some moments felt stronger than others, as a whole Ashphord Jacoway is compelling as she tells us her own experiences dealing with identity in a world obsessed with stereotypes. Being "Not black enough" or "not female enough" to be who she wanted, she finds herself projecting her desire for acceptance into the world of RPG's- where one can hide behind the anonymit... full review

So- if you didn't already see- there are 30 other reviews of this show and 29 of them love it. I could beat a dead horse, but seeing this show would be far more amusing. I highly recommend it:)... full review

Fancy! A Southern Gothic Camp Parable

What a hilarious show!! For the record- I am not a country music fan. However, Reba's country anthem about a woman teaching her daughter how to survive in a "man's" world is not unknown to me. With that said- I probably wouldn't have chosen this show to be among my "I have got to see" shows at Fringe this year. However, my wife is a fan and this show went right on her radar. For once she was right (hope she doesn't see this) Chris Farah brings Fancy to life as her one woman show laughs us t... full review

Cleaner Than Blood

Cleaner than Blood is an interesting story. Three lost souls brought together by chance and opportunity, and each fueled by their own deep desire, converge the night before a wealthy man is scheduled to return home. The actors all give compelling performances, giving us glimpses of their inner demons and ultimately the reason for each of them to be present at this dark time. While I felt there were a few inconsistencies in the script- and spots that I would have preferred more information... full review
