"Blackboxing" is the real deal. The show within a show is delightfully immersive, and there isn't a single wasted second or line of dialogue to explain the concept or linger; the economy of word in this play is one I greatly respect and appreciate. Matt's experience in not only directing, but directing for theater specifically (which in LA is less common than you'd think) shows in this class. He has great instincts backed up by tons of experience, so what can you lose? I am absolutely happy with the time we spent in this class. Part of it was lecture-style with Q&A, and a larger part was a hands-on approach to tackling scenes we brought in. See this show for the writing. It's not just the truthful, personal storytelling. It's the fact that it's put to words so eloquently. It's poetic in a wonderful, subtle way. The show is essentially four monologues, but they are strong and poignant. More important than that, though, is that each one takes us to a lower level than before until finally being lifted up at the end. The arc here is great, even if the stories are unrelated.
