Description
Theatrical Productions at Fringe festivals are often designed to flip, reimagine and subvert the standard narrative tropes that more traditional productions generate.
TPP’s Trope-Buster! is an award designed to recognize the production each year that forces us to re-examine tropes in the most unique and/or unusual way. Whether immersive or traditional in nature, the Trope-Buster production will inspire, motivate and force the audience to contemplate stories from a new, revised perspective.
Shocking ideas. Unique approaches. Repurposed narratives. If you’re breaking new ground with your production in how your audience views your story, you just might be a Trope-Buster!
Qualifications
To qualify for this award, your production must be an original production for the Hollywood Fringe Festival in the year the award is given. Shows that premiere in another space or return for another year are not eligible.
Productions must utilize some unique aspect of their production that moves them beyond being a traditional theatrical production of an audience and a play. The unique aspect can come from how the play is presented, how the audience perceives it or how the narrative engages with the character and the viewer. But there must be something unique.
Methodology
Productions that wish to be considered should submit their request to They Played Productions through their email address: [email protected]. In the request, please submit an explanation of how the production believes it qualifies as a Trope-buster.
The TPP Production Team will contact productions that qualify and arrange for a comp to see the production.
Each production seen by a member of the Production Team will have a report created with numbers scaled from 1-10 in three categories:
- Uniqueness – how unique the production’s approach is
- Quality – the quality of the production
- Excitement – how emotionally engaging the production is
The Production Team will meet once all shows have been seen and determine the final winner (or winners, in case of a tie) from the productions viewed.
Reward
TPP’s Trope-Buster! will give the producer of the winning production a unique physical statue created by Company Founder Thea Rivera as a Trope-busting award on its own. Each year, the award will be a new creation.
Productions will also be added yearly to a plaque so that each year’s winners will be remembered for the future.
