SOARING SOLO ARTIST AWARD

Description
On behalf of the Soaring Solo LLC community, Jessica Lynn Johnson, Bryan Rasmussen, & the Whitefire Theatre Sherman Oaks, we would like to honor one solo theatre artist who truly exemplifies what it means to soar solo in a one person play via their solo theatre performance technique, writing prowess, and overall theatricalization of story & promotion (technical genius, creative staging, marketing savvy, etc). This talented individual will receive a physical award as well as official selection for 1 FREE performance in the LARGEST Solo Theatre Festival on the West Coast, the 2018 Whitefire Theatre SOLO FEST in Sherman Oaks.
Qualifications
The show must be a full length solo play or solo musical, 50-90minutes in length. The solo artist CANNOT be one of the solo artists/shows that I will be directing in the HFF 2017 as to remain fair, unbiased and inclusive to all other participants, per the advice of HFF tech support Dave. Therefore, this award will be given on behalf of the entire Soaring Solo LLC Community to one artist outside of my immediate creative community. The solo artist will need to be exceptional in their solo theatre performance technique, savvy with their marketing & promotional efforts, as well as possess a captivating, entertaining and impactful script/story. Next, the ability to “show” versus “tell”, utilizing theatricalization devices such as creative technical components, multi-media attributes, props, costumes, pantomime, and/or any other means used to bring the story off of the page and onto the stage in a theatrical way will be considered. Finally, and most importantly, the uniqueness of the solo artist themselves and their own ability to Soar Solo will be very much taken into consideration.
Methodology
As the founder of Soaring Solo LLC, an internationally toured, award winning and published solo artist/director & developer, a participant in the LA Female Playwrights Initiative, and a member of the LA Women’s Theatre Festival Submission Screening panel, I will be using my 13+ years of experience in the solo theatre genre to identify one solo artist who is truly exceptional and exemplifies what it means to soar solo in a one person play. I will be taking into account the individual’s solo theatre performance technique (interesting blocking, character distinction and depth, confidence & preparedness with material, etc). I will also be seeking a captivating, entertaining and impactful script/story. I am interested to see their creativity in marketing and promotional efforts. Next, I will be evaluating the artist’s ability to theatricalize their piece, and their overall ability to “show” versus “tell” their story (ie. creative technical components, multi-media attributes, props, costumes, pantomime, and/or any other device used to bring the story off of the page and onto the stage in a theatrical way will be considered). Finally, and most importantly, the uniqueness of the artist voice, point of view, and their own ability to soar solo will be highly considered.
