What I liked
The singing and acting were incredible. The direction was seamless, supporting the performers. It was a crowded stage with lots of action but I felt the performers were truly in command of the space. The fight scenes and choreography were really fun. I love that they used PVC pipes as swords and colored socks with sweaters for “summer” wear.
What I didn't like
I would have liked for a slightly larger venue but the tight quarters added to the fun of the show.
My overall impression
I loved going to a late night show at the Fringe to see a musical I didn’t know based on a book I never read. The performances were beautifully crafted with some excellent musical theatre performers, especially the three leads, Caitlin Gallogly, Marc Ginsburg and Stanton Morales. I feel so lucky to have seen this show up close. There is so much money and production values put into musicals these days that it was a divine privilege to see a bare bones production. The staging by director Katharine McDonough was truly inventive; it enabled the audience to use our imaginations and really hear the music, beautifully orchestrated by musical director Sean Alexander Bart. It was fun to see the musicians onstage with the performers. The 2 plus hours sped by as I got caught up in the story. I feel privileged to have seen this big broadway musical in a small black box venue at the Fringe.
