The movie’s original dialogue will always remain a hoot. Replacing Barbara Billingsley’s jive-interpreting passenger in the movie with one who interprets millennial-speak personally cracked me up (although the audience didn’t agree with me on opening night).
What I didn't like
How unfunny so many of the jokes were. Sure, there’s a few laughs, but no matter how game the cast was (boy, did they give it their all — sometimes too much), the jokes rarely landed right. And the updates (“Snakes on a Plane”) didn’t help.
My overall impression
Their heart is in the right place, but spoofing a spoof (and hoping the audience joins in a la “Rocky Horror Picture Show”) couldn’t be trickier. I could see how this looked like a laugh-riot as an idea, but even with a few laughs, the evening just doesn’t work. It’s a series of bits (some — sorry to say — painfully misguided) waiting for something to happen. What a shame! I was SO rooting for this show.
