What I liked
Every single fucking second!
The space was perfect for the story, from the fan, to the criss-crossed window and the stairs (although I would have loved to have seen more use of them). The lighting was great and the acting was spectacular. I loved the re-use of the limited props and the use of space. It worked.
What I didn't like
At times I was a little confused at what was going on (but this didn’t hinder the experience)
My overall impression
Transcendental, mesmerizing, explosive, dynamic, raw, honest, powerful, sensational, breath-taking. I’m not exaggerating. I was blown away by Gabriella’s amazing stage presence. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her the entire time. She transformed from one character to the next flawlessly, taking the audience on a journey that spans time and place. What an incredible story! What an incredible actress! Gabriella spoke and sang from her heart retelling the life of her grandmother whilst interpreting several characters including her mother and herself at different ages. This is what theatre should be; a deep visceral connection between audience and performer, and I truly felt that in last night’s performance. The moment when she is her grandmother singing the national anthem with defiance, in protest, for the revolution, literally made my heart clench. Gabriella on stage exuded some kind of power I’ve rarely seen – she has raw talent. A highly highly recommended show – a must see – a if you don’t see this show you’ve missed out big time kinda show! I’d love to see it performed again!
