The Fringe Family Program

What is Fringe Family?

The purpose of the Fringe Family program is to help families find age appropriate programming for their children, introduce young people to the joys of live performance, and encourage new works for all ages.

Fringe Family is an excellent way to market your kid-friendly show as we provide tools to match patrons preferring such programming to your projects. Special weekend programming for kids at Fringe Central will showcase some of these shows along with special workshops for creative kids and parents.

Rules & Restrictions

Although the fringe remains open access and uncurated, projects designated as Fringe Family should comply with the following rules and restrictions:

  • Script/Act should be appropriate in language and themes for all ages. i.e. no nudity, cursing, or strong adult content.
  • No excessive violent or graphic material. This means that some violence can be implied but it must be appropriate for an audience between 8 and 12 years old. (sword fight = cool. Bloody gun battle=not so cool)

Program Guidelines

We have included some guidelines to give more ideas of what shows would work in Fringe Family:

  • Programming should try to be educational and entertaining. Although not every project will be directly educational, producers should consider including some educational content. That said, a fun sing-along show is just fine too.
  • Projects should consider incorporating interactivity with the children and audience as a way to engage them and keep their attention. Consider promoting interaction for all age groups. Examples include activity books, having children help with the project/script, call and reply sections.

Interested in participating? Participants are asked during the registration process if they’d like to join this program (when the registration fee is charged). This program is 100% opt-in and requires no extra fees.
