“Remember 92: Sierra Leone Will Rise Again” – A Riveting Story of Survival and
Resilience at the 2024 Hollywood Fringe Festival

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – April 26, 2024 – The Hollywood Fringe Festival is proud to announce the premiere of “Remember 92: Sierra Leone Will Rise Again,” a powerful new play by Jonima Diaby. This deeply personal production will make its debut on June 6th, offering audiences a unique and moving portrayal of a Sierra Leonean family’s struggle for survival amidst the chaos of civil war. Directed by the acclaimed Caroline Ducrocq, the play promises to be a standout piece at this year’s festival.

“Remember 92” is set in the early 90s during a turbulent period in Sierra Leone’s history, encapsulated through the eyes of a family living in a military barrack in Freetown. This narrative explores the impact of the war led by RUF rebels and the subsequent coup d’état that reshaped the nation. The story is especially significant as it draws from the personal experiences of playwright Jonima Diaby, whose own family lived through these harrowing times.

The cast includes two members who have firsthand experience of the Sierra Leone Civil War, adding authenticity and depth to the performance. The play’s themes of love, family, resilience, and survival highlight the enduring spirit of the Sierra Leonean people amidst adversity.

Jonima Diaby, the playwright, shares his personal connection to the story, “1992 was the first time I heard the sound of an AK47. It marked a dramatic chapter in my life when my family had to hide, fearing for our lives. ‘Remember 92’ not only tells the story of my country but also honors the memories of those we lost.”

The director, Caroline Ducrocq, brings her extensive experience from both the New York and Los Angeles theater scenes to ensure a compelling production. Ducrocq’s approach to storytelling is expected to bring out powerful performances that resonate with audiences.

The Hollywood Fringe Festival continues its tradition of offering a platform for diverse and innovative voices. “Remember 92” is the only African story in this year’s lineup, making it a significant addition to the festival’s celebration of global narratives.
