What I liked

The acting was, overall, fantastic. The art direction was simple and effective. The subject-matter was fascinating.

What I didn't like

I didn’t especially care for the “Grecian” style of storytelling employed. The impression it gave was one of style over substance and, given that the basis of events was factual, but the characters were fictional(ized), the extra layer of audience distanciation that results from using the “chorus” stood as an obstacle to rather than a portal into audience identification with the characters and material. Add to that the very “writerly” use of language, and the result is one of feeling more like one is the recipient of a book report than being drawn into the events. The fact that the actors were able to illicit genuine sympathy despite all this is yet another testament to their abilities.

My overall impression

Compelling subject-matter and some outstanding performances.
