Improv is a staple of Los Angeles theater, so companies that can find a new way to approach it or a new wrinkle to the game are worth checking out. Enter The Human Test Subjects, an all-women improv group comprised of very talented ladies who all deal with some form of mental illness (from anxiety to depression to PTSD and so on). Watching their preview performance, I was struck by many different reactions. First and foremost--they're damn funny. As you want an improv group to be. In any improv situation, some jokes land better than others--but every single one of them had at least a few great moments that were worth watching, and that's fantastic. This show is a ton of fun, and provides a great insight into the performers as well. I love the message presented and how these women bravely choose to step out into such a vulnerable medium to bring a light into the lives of others. I see a fun, talented group of women forming, and can't wait to see what happens to this group in the future!... full review

As an Actor I appreciate Improv as a skill,but usually am not a big fan of watching it....This was a pleasant exception,seasoned all female cast,great characters,quick witted,and a messageOne Cast Member,Emily Decker also appears in Broadway Noir,the show I produced,and I know her work well.This is a perfect vehicle for her quirky talents. This show was HILARIOUS. The performers are really good at doing what they do, especially when they get good suggestions from the audience (and even not-so-good ones!), and the meaning behind their forming of a troupe is inspiring as well. Try and catch this show if you can--it's one of the funniest improv groups I've seen. The transitions were sometimes a bit awkward and not quite so smooth, which detracted from the pace ever-so-slightly, but they more than made up for it during their games--I couldn't stop laughing.... full review

I loved it! One of their goals, stated at the top of the show, is to remove the stigma of mental illness. Each actor shared a bit of herself with the audience and from that moment on, actor and audience were a team. And mental illness and creativity are often very closely linked, furthering their mission. They made us laugh, and they made us remember their stories.
