Shakespeare(ish)

I really enjoyed this show! It was fun and creative with some absolutely beautiful mask work! The retelling of Shakespeare plays was clever and interesting and at times completely hilarious. I especially loved the Pyramus and Thisbe one-man show as well as the Romeo and Juliet segment. Unfortunately it ran more than 10 minutes over its posted end time which forced me and my group to leave before it ended to get to our next show. This was really disappointing because it was fantastic up until then. It's a great show and I definitely recommend it, however I hope they cut at least 10 - 15 minutes in order to fit it into the posted 70 minutes. Make sure you do not stack back to back shows if you are planning on seeing Shakespeare(ish). ... full review

The Rogue Artists Ensemble's retelling remixing and mashing up of Shakespeare's work was a JOY! The masks and costumes were colorful and inventive (shower curtains?? inner tubes???) and the actors were charming and delightful! I'm not an expert when it comes to Shakespeare, so I think some aspects (characters) went over my head. But, the scenes with Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet were hilarious retellings of stories I knew well. There was a very tender moment with Ophelia that took my breath away! There were a few glitches in the preview performance including going over time but I'm sure they're aware of it and will be able to tighten things up in the "real" performances. This production was fun and creative. I attended the performance with my 12 year old daughter. It was definitely family friendly and a good option for all ages. The bright colored costumes and props along with the fast and frantic pace kept our attention for the whole time. Familiarity with some of Shakespear's most popular plays and characters will help you appreciate the experience more. If you're going with folks unfamiliar with the Bard, you'll want to be ready to explain some of the elements of Romeo and Juliette, MacBeth, Hamlet, and the Twelfth Night among other plays to get some of the humor. The actors are full of energy, enthusiasm and personality. This blended with live music and physical comedy make for an entertaining 70 minutes... full review

A brilliant visual buffet of clowning and buffoonery. Such innovative and exquisite interpretations of a wide swath of the Bard's work. Among all of the memorable moments featured in this pristine piece of performance art, I'm still chuckling at the bit about all of the one-line roles from the Folio. Don't miss it!... full review

I really enjoyed this show! It was like The Labyrinth meets The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. My only complaint was that the show ran long when I saw it, so I had to miss the end to see the next show I had tickets for, and I would have loved to see the end.... full review

I also really enjoyed this show. I'm a Shakespeare nerd, and I have plenty of people I have and will be referring, as I know they too will absolutely love it. I think the ideas behind most of the vignettes is great - really fun for a nerd like me. And the songs, the costumes, the props, the puppets are all fantastic visual spectacles, and there are some incredible physical performances. I would love to see this team polish their act and cut some stuff down, but I totally recommend seeing this show. It was a blast, and I definitely consider myself a newborn Rogue Artists fan. Comedia dell'arte skits on Shakespearean stories. It's a little slow getting started but once it's rolling, the five performers work very hard...and successfully...to entertain you. If you're a Shakespeare lover, have no fear. It's all kind of goofy fun. Especially notable are both Alex Makardish and Jeremy Hohn, who each do a terrific solo riff, one on the "players" from Midsummer Nights Dream and one on the great Will's one-liners. It's somewhere above "pretty good" and short of "amazing".... full review

I thoroughly enjoyed the imaginative and whimsical costumes and set pieces, particularly the masks and outfits that quick-changed before our eyes. The Key-tar, ukulele, and accordion, along with the cast singing, was a fun addition. I laughed out loud multiple times and was engaged up until the last 15(ish) minutes when the audience interaction and imaginative whimsy was replaced by a prolonged slap-stick fight sequence referencing multiple Shakespearean death scenes that went on a little too long and lost momentum. With some tightening and stronger direction this could be a great show. Regardless, I had fun and the cast seemed to enjoy themselves, too. ... full review
