D'Arc Voices: Re-Telling the Story of Joan of Arc

With minimal set, music and lighting the actors in the show told a story that was intense and heartfelt. Eileen Rogers portrayal of Joan of arc was outstanding. The direction was spot on. With the Fringe so full of comedies, this one hour drama is definitely one not to miss.... full review

Known for creative and unusual adaptations the Underground Theatre once again knocks it out of the park with "Voices" the retelling of Joan of Arc. Written by Craig Victor this retelling puts a new slant on Joan's execution in a tightly woven script that raises the tension to the final terrible outcome. Directed by Steven Helgoth with his usual attention to detail not only to the acting but also to the staging to create a visual work that heightens the drama. The ensemble rounds out the "picture" of Joan's life and her trial with adeptness and no false moments. Bravo. See it. ... full review

Having seen a previous production of this company's I knew that I was in for a treat and indeed it was. The staging, casting and direction made it a memorable production. Eileen Rogers as Joan had the ability to transcend from a childlike innocence and rebellion into a person whose life had been changed by her voices and whom is convinced that God is directing her actions. The sincerity of her performance was very moving and thrown into ' relief ' by the excellent characterizations of the other actors whose performances never wavered. More please! ... full review

D'Arc Voices is a beautifully written and directed drama with an outstanding performance by Eileen Rogers as Joan. The simple yet extremely effective staging not only suits the story but also the theatre, drawing the audience in from start to finish. Enough can't be said about Rogers' beautifully subtle, and emotional performance. She captured Joan's youth, innocence, strength, frustration and her strong love of God and country without ever loosing her humanity. From Joan's declaration of her ability to lead an army and talk to God, to her explaining, yet again, why she chooses to wear "men's" clothes, there is never had a hit of the dramatic. This is truly a production worth seeing.... full review

This was a tight and well executed production from the script to the acting to the staging. And the combination of the minimalist set and dramatic lighting made it a visually stunning production. I also thought the play write did a good job of summarizing the story without losing validity. The only thing I was longing for was more variety, or contrast in the "emotional landscape". Emotions ran high throughout the show and violence, anger, sadness, and despair dominated, which is appropriate. But, at the same time I found myself wondering who were these characters in real life? Who were they when they weren't busy shouting and carrying on, or playing the role of victim or aggressor? And, I was longing for this idea of Joan being transgendered... full review
