Breaking Bard

As a long time fan of all things Shakespeare and a somewhat recent convert to the cult of Breaking Bad, this was a must see Fringe show for me. Thank you goodness I bought my tickets early, cause this instant classic has a much-deserved sold out run. The show is a perfect blend of humor, high-brow monologues, low-brow characters and machine guns. Major props to the brilliant writer who perfectly blended Elizabethan text with a very modern story, all done with wit and humor. The cast (many of whom were doing double or triple duty) was charming and the set was completely bare, allowing the audience to focus purely on the language and acting. From whatever angle you approaching Gus Krieger's melding of Shakespeare's canon with Breaking Bad, you will be enticed by each moment, by every line, stoked with a hot poker to catch every word lest you miss any reference. By blending passages and lines from the canon with the names, places, and necessarily-skin-and-bones plot of Breaking Bad, what Krieger and the Porters have created is a spark notes rendering of the hit television series that keep the Shakespearephiles perked up, hoping to identify from which play each line comes. While many favorite elements of Breaking Bad are lost (my kingdom for a Mike), the massive paring-down is obviously required for the time constraints of Fringe, and quickly force the audience to adapt our ... full review

'Breaking Bard' was a geniusly crafted script that melded the most famous lines in Shakespeares works with modern day 'Breaking Bad'. Having never seen 'Breaking Bad', I was still easily able to follow the story (and now don't need to binge watch 6 seasons on Netflix). The actors had a fabulous command of the language and of their Breaking Bad characters. Congrats to a fun, well done productions!... full review
