Lockout presented the revolutionary working class struggle in turn of the century Ireland in an enchanting storytelling style. Relying heavily on the lead, Bridgette Campbell, the show, which comprises of several long monologues could have easily felt too long, but Bridgette’s delivery made the weight of the show feel tangible and real, even a century removed from the subject matter. The show gently breaks the fourth wall, by talking to the audience directly, creating intimacy and an empathy to the character’s struggles.... full review

Director Christopher Wallinger creates an an amazing ambience through a clever and believable set, apropos props and a dedicated, talented cast, as audiences are taken back to Ireland 1913, before the Easter Rising. You enter the theater and standing on stage is a fiddler (violinist) playing the most nostalgic music and sent me way back to my childhood. The show is already winning. Then sat down you are transfixed with the lovely and charming set. Then it is announced that all the props and parts of the set are second hand and been custom mad for the show. The lights are yet to go up and already I'm impressed, the small details are always appreciated by me. The show itself is a very heartfelt story depicting the working class generation of the irish in the early 1900's. The beautifully charming and engaging 'Ellen Byrne' takes us on a lovely journey played by the beautifully charming and engaging Bridget Campbell. Lockout was the most moving, captivating and professional show I've seen at Fringe. The lead, Bridgette Campbell, provided a stunning portrayal of a woman devastated by the 1913 Lockout in Ireland to transport you back to a time when men, women and children fought and died for their rights as workers. Rather than deliver a long dramatic monologue, Bridgette made you feel like you were a friend sitting at her kitchen table reliving the highs and lows together. But what really took this show to the next level was the music, sound and movement happening on stage - all perfectly orchestrated and delivered by an outstanding supporting cast and ensemble. The Lockout was exceptional! I loved being taken on an emotional journey into the story of the Labor Union strike in the turn of the century in Dublin, and the conditions and struggles of the laborers and the sacrifices that were made through the emotions and words of the character Ellen Byrne. The acting was so compelling! Everyone was wonderful, with Christopher Wallinger bringing intensity to his character Jim Larkin, and Lyle Friederichs who portrays James Connolly with passion and fierceness. Playing the lead character Ellen Byrne, Bridgette Campbell took the audience on a emotional journey with such seamless storytelling!
