This is a story that needed to be told. Very timely as we await a potentially historic decision from the Supreme Court this month. Well staged, performed, directed and promoted, the passion of Anastasia Coon emanates through every moment on the stage. At its core this is a love story, and I am not a romantic, but it's real, raw and filled with just the right mix of pain, ecstasy and humor, at times sarcastic, which I love. I expected this to a commentary on gender, romance and the queer identity. Instead what Anatasia and her team put together was much more subtle and specific than the label "queer theater" would usually imply. (Even though I love queer theater!) Watching one person take on the range of emotions displayed by the diverse range of characters displayed was breath taking. I would see anything else Anatasia and her crew put on. It's one thing to know an actor as a friend and kind soul but awe-inspiringly amazing to get to see them as a storyteller. And what could have easily been told by an ensemble cast was gracefully performed, written, and directed by one amazing individual, Anastasia Coon. I don't have the experience of seeing many one-person shows but Anastasia kept me engaged in the story as well as the relationship between all of the individuals she was portraying. ... full review

If you have the chance, see Gracie and Rose. Time at once stands still and unfurls like barreling herd of sheep in Anastasia Coon’s world premiere piece. She seamlessly moves from character to character, fully inhabiting their private and public moments, creating an intimate, raw portrayal of these women’s lives as they try to stitch them together. Gorgeous direction, vivid writing, and Anastasia's ability to carry this difficult solo show is second to none. Both surprising and inviting, this story is completely engrossing and altogether new. GRACIE AND ROSE is a beautifully written, directed and performed piece of theater that shines light upon a period of LGBT history that rarely gets much attention. Anastasia Coon has written a script with such care and love for her characters that it is palpable and obvious to the audience that she has painstakingly crafted every word of the book. Her acting is authentic, deeply emotional and sincere. This retro story of the lengths two lesbian women in the 50's will go to to appear as a heterosexual married couple is balanced by Coon's innate sexuality - Che'Rae Adams direction is well thought out, simple and appropriately adaptable.
