Shakespeare in LA review

“Shakespeare. It’s not just for highbrows anymore. You can be sure of that when you see The Flynnsmen present Shakespeare’s King Phycus at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. What may have once scared off those less familiar with Shakespeare’s plays for fear of not understanding the language is now made completely and hilariously accessible to everyone.

In a little over an hour, the play extracts scenes, characters, and memorable moments from Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies such as Hamlet, King Lear, Romeo & Juliet, Richard III, and Julius Caesar, and brilliantly crafts a wacky new tale with more belly laughs than you thought you had in you. Director John Apicella and Abby Wilde have truncated the longer Tom Willmorth play to fit the Fringe schedule retaining all of the original’s verve and vitality. Jacob Sidney and Crystal Keith are responsible for the original music.

Gia On The Move review for King Phycus

“Everything but the kitchen sink Shakespeare.

I’m going to say it right up front, of all of the shows I’ve seen so far at the Hollywood Fringe Festival this year, King Phycus is the cream of the crop!

A theatrical parody of monumental proportions, the Flynnsmen (troupe) take all the plots of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Caesar, MacBeth, and Richard III (I even heard a little bit of Lear) combined in a whirlwind of iambic pentameter to create the zaniest, most well written, outrageous, camp comedies that would make the Bard himself green with envy. It is brilliantly written by Tom Willmorth and hilariously performed by one of the most dedicated and hard working casts, right down to timing and delivery, that I’ve witnessed to date: Patrick Wenk-Wolff, Jason Thomas, Drew Doyle, Abby Wilde, Belen Greene and Buck Zachary. Directed by John Apicella and as...

Shakespeare's "King Phycus" hits the Fringe

June 15, 2013

Here comes the next great Shakespearian work to hit the Hollywood Fringe Festival! An Historical-Pastoral-Tragical-Comedy in Five Acts. All the plots of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Caesar, MacBeth, and Richard III combined in a whirlwind of iambic pentameter consisting of thousands of characters played by 6 actors (…at one point a single actor plays 20,000 Romans). Rumored to be Shakespeare’s earliest work which he later edited into 7 or 8 minor plays. Delight will be found in buckets of wit and fanny-packs of knock-knock jokes. Written by Tom Willmorth. Directed by John Apicella. Produced by the Flynnsmen.
