'The Third Date' Review on Examiner

July 02, 2013

Another night of Fringing at the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival and both of the shows were about dating. They were also both staged at the Fringe Mainstage aka Open Fist Theatre.

The first one up was The Third Date. I had been particularly interested in this play because the cast included Rebecca Mader, star of Lost and other television shows. Unfortunately, Mader was called out of town on a job, and did not perform. However, her understudy, Selah Victor, was a perfect replacement for the role of Evans’ ex, Barrie. The remainder of the cast was composed of Peter Cilella as Evan, Megan Raye Manzi as his date, Allie, and Chris Wylde as her ex, Helmer.

This show was brilliantly written by Deborah Gross and perfectly directed by Doug Hannah. The concept could not have been better, and I laughed until I almost cried at the incredible story unfolding on the stage.

Kudos to the great cast and crew that started out my “date night” with so much flair. Th...

My favorite show this Fringe season is “The Third Date”. The show is funny, charming, and effortlessly performed by an all-star cast.

Director Doug Hannah makes his directorial debut in collaboration with quirky, up and coming playwright Deborah Gross and the result is one very honest and comedic look at the world of dating.

Did I mention the casting is perfect and the actors rock?

Go see “The Third Date” with Megan Raye Manzi, Rebecca Mader, Peter Cilella, Chris Wylde (understudy Tony Alvarez)

MANJR.COM reviews 'The Third Date'

June 19, 2013

‘The Third Date’, Written by Deborah Gross, Directed by Doug Hannah, is a funny and original one act play featuring Peter Cilella (Evan) and Megan Raye Manzi (Allie). The likable pair meet at Evan’s apartment for their infamous third date, filled with nerves and expectations for the night. The expected awkward banter is interrupted by the appearances of Barrie (Rebecca Mader) and Helmer (Antonio Alvarez). These ghosts of relationships past proceed to charm, distract and antagonize our young would-be lovers from each other’s arms while their fears and neuroses are revealed to each other and the audience.

Megan Raye Manzi and Peter Cilella do good work as Allie and Evan, portraying the clumsy early moments of a relationship without becoming caricatures. Rebecca Mader plays Barrie with enthusiasm, giving “the hot exotic ex girlfriend” character both charm and humor. Antonio Alvarez, who stepped in for Chris Wylde on our night, was convincing and likable as Helmer. Both Barrie and...

Get Lucky with “The Third Date” at the Hollywood Fringe Festival

New one-act comedy makes one couple’s date feel like two’s a crowd

LOS ANGELES (May 20, 2013) ⎯ A lot of couples go on first dates, some go on second dates but even fewer make it to the third date when decisions are made and relationships either blossom or implode. “The Third Date” is a hilariously awkward one-act comedy debuting at the Hollywood Fringe Festival that allows the audience to join Evan and Allie’s third date. The momentous occasion is fraught with expectations. Anticipation! Sexual tension! Excitement! Prepare for none of them to be met as their imaginations take over and their former flames show up. Unfortunately, they have a lot to say.

Written by Deborah Gross, a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade, and directed by Doug H...
