The Feminist’s Guide to the Hollywood Fringe
June 6, 2013 by Holly L. Derr
It’s summer, which means elite theater professionals all over America are headed to the country for summer stock. If you can’t make it up into the mountains this summer (or if you can’t afford the expensive tickets to these high-society productions), fear not: Our cities are full of all variety of underground artists hawking their wares at Fringe Festivals.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which began in 1947 when uninvited artists showed up and performed on the fringe of the Edinburgh International Festival, is the crème de la crème of fringes, but today almost every major city in this country holds their own Fringe: New York, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Los Angeles are just a few. Even the Berkshires—the nucleus of America’s summer stock culture—hosts a Fringe Festival.

Discounted rental rates and collective marketing opportunities attract so many artists to Fringes that sorting throug...

INTERVIEW WITH LIZ FEMI, WRITER-PERFORMER OF TAKE ME TO THE POORHOUSE
NOAH J NELSON ON WEDNESDAY, JUN. 5TH

Solo shows are the high wire acts of theatre. When they fail it leaves a bloody mess and a broken body of a career.

When they work, it’s a wonder to behold.

Liz Femi’s “upside-down Cinderella story” works. It works brilliantly. Take Me To The Poorhouse will be one of the shows I focus on in our upcoming feature about this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival. Right now you can peek in on our interview with Femi and producer Sara Fenton as we talk about the show and Fringe. This is a full interview, so be prepared for possibl...

‘Take Me to the Poorhouse’ at the Hollywood Fringe Festival

June 4, 2013 | By Beverly Lafontaine | Category: Theater and Dance

Liz Femi
“Take Me to the Poorhouse” is a one-woman play of fun — pure and simple. Actress Liz Femi is schoolgirl Lizzie, a middle-class Nigerian with fantasies fueled by the ridiculous and fanciful exploits she’s seen in American movies. The safe, orderly and clean life she and her parents live in their Nigerian neighborhood seems to her to be less “soulful” than the lives of her poorer classmates. You can catch Femi’s delightful and comical performance at the Lounge Theatres where she will perform June 8 through 26 as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Femi not only puts Lizzie before us with all her childish and naïve notions, but through mimicry and striking physical poses she acquaints us with a neighborhood of characters. A one-woman show like this could easily be presented as “storytelling,” but thanks to the artful direct...

Take Me to The Poorhouse
A middle class African girl dreams of becoming poor to have “soul” and win the heart of her classmate ♥.

Disclosure: Invited to staged reading in private home. No cost to attend.

I’ve been hearing about this show because the Assistant Director/Producer attends my workshops. The story is fascinating and has all the ingredients for success: a POV I’ve never heard, the right balance of humor and gravity, a dynamic performer, plus partnership with a like-minded organization:

We pledge to donate 10% of all ticket proceeds to MAMA HOPE, a non-profit with a mission to “Stop The Pity and Unlock The Potential” in several African communities. We dig that

I dig that too.

With two more months until it’s premiere in the Hollywood Fringe Festival, it will be exciting to see how it all shapes up. Femi does a beautiful job of letting the words create the wor...
