THE HEARTFELT COMEDIC STORY ABOUT GROWING UP HALF-CHINESE AND HALF-IRISH, "MIXED RACE SWEETIE" COMES TO FRINGE!

Mike Lane: Mixed Race Sweetie

view project

Written and performed by Mike Lane (half-Chinese, half-Irish), “Mixed Race Sweetie” is a solo comedy show that explores what it means to be mixed race today. Based on his life, Mike uses stories, sketches and songs to share his experiences as an idiot searching for an identity to call his own. Will he find one? Come see!

For most of his life, Mike has felt insecure about who he was. Not white enough, not Asian enough, never enough. All he wanted was a group to belong to, a box he could check on the Census form, truly anything. So he spent most of his life desperately trying to be like his Irish, Bostonian dad, but when his father passed away from complications due to alcohol, Mike had to completely rethink his identity.

How do you suddenly and drastically reinvent yourself in your mid-twenties?

In “Mixed Race Sweetie,” Mike uses humor, heart and hip exercises (not really, just needed a third H) to explain how he went from insecure idiot to proud mixed race idiot and why everyone should go through an early 2000’s pop punk phase.

About the performer/writer: Mike Lane has spent the past ten years performing sketch at the UCB Theater in NY and LA. With his sketch group Boat, he performed at Montreal JFL and was a Comedy Central Comic To Watch. He has been seen on some TV shows like “Modern Family” and “Mom.” He played in a ska band in high school and he thanks his mom for supporting him even though she doesn’t understand why he can’t be a lawyer.
