Karaoke Saved My Life

view project

Karaoke Saved My Life is an immersive theatrical cabaret presented by Scott Swinton.

Scotty D, just a city boy born and raised in south Detroit, takes audiences on a Journey, showing how the power of karaoke has saved his life. This one man plus immersive interactive show is uplifting and fun. It’s sure to get folks pouring their hearts out, warbling away, and tapping their toes to the tunes of our times. The show teaches us how to hold onto that feeling, righting the wrongs, making the amends and saving the World!

In these challenging times of Brexit, Trump and quinoa, we need a place to go where we can heal our psychic wounds, and scientific research proves that karaoke can provide the necessary solace. Through stories, songs, and a bit of dancing, the show demonstrates the healing power of karaoke. No problem is too big or too small that power ballads, big anthems and cheesy pop can’t cure!

Scott is an experienced immersive theatre practitioner and actor/writer who has performed in the UK with the legendary cult hit You Me Bum Bum Train, as well as nationally known companies such as Actors Touring Company, Dante or Die, Shunt, Wildworks and Geraldine Pilgrim.

Scott also collaborates with Rhiannon Brace on theatre projects, including Inauguration, Mr President, and The Promised Land which was commissioned by the Camden People’s Theatre following a performance at the Dare Festival in London. The Promised Land also had a critically well-received run at Brighton Fringe Festival. Broadway Baby said of his performance, that it was played with ‘benign menace’. He’s also a karaoke fan, and is a Hall of Famer at Karaoke Rumble in London.

Terry O’Donovan, Co-Artistic Director of Dante or Die said of the show: ““We howled with laughter, sang our hearts out and left with big smiles on our faces”

Karaoke Saved My Life is Scott’s first solo show, had a successful run when it premiered at Underbelly Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, and is returning to Underbelly in 2019.

Manhattan Digest said:” Scott Swinton is a fascinating character and has some terrific stories. He’s a cheery combination of Mister Rogers and Liberace.

“Our host ultimately convinces us of the communal power of music. It unites us. It celebrates us. Sometimes, it even saves us.”

Broadway Baby said: “Like a disco-themed Steve Martin, he generates smiles wherever he goes.

“This is an unusual take on storytelling cabaret; Swinton has given it a twist; the songs are to be sung by audience members in classic karaoke style. It’s a brilliant idea.”

The show has been at the International Solo Festival in London, as well as Brighton Fringe Festival this year. This is the American premiere, after which, the show will return to the UK for performances at the Shaftesbury (Dorset) Fringe Festival and in London ahead of Edinburgh in August.

For the Hollywood Fringe, Karaoke Saved My Life will be at the Lounge Theatre on July 7, 8, 14, 15, 22, 27, 28 and 29.
