HORNY THE MUSICAL-WORLD PREMIERE

Horny-The Musical comes to Hollywood Fringe!

Fringe veteran Katherine King pays homage to the Greek tradition of a “satyr play” with an absurd farce that touches upon universal dilemmas…and celebrates positive female sexuality.

LOS ANGELES – Katherine King lives with a real-life satyr.

She first befriended actor-writer Jeremiah Benjamin in a writing group she hosts, Westside Original Works. Inspired by his naturally bombastic, fantastical style, she created a character for him as her long-lost father, who happens to be a half-man, half-goat woodland deity straight out of ancient mythology. When he became her housemate a few months ago, Katherine decided it was the perfect time to flesh out the characters in a full-length, saucy comedy.

The result is Horny-The Musical, making its world premiere at The Hobgoblin Playhouse at The Arena Stage this June as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Social-climbing as quickly as possible away from her embarrassingly bohemian mother into the arms of the most eligible bachelor and heir to the Smitt Family Wineries, Emily is the luckiest girl in the world…until she starts to grow horns right before the wedding. Her new social circles could never accept such a thing, so she must resolve the problem before her new fiance––not to mention her new mother-in-law––finds out. Knowing her mother’s sexually free nature, she wonders if its genetic and braces herself for the answer to the question: Who is my father? This simple question unleashes an avalanche of satyrs and nymphs from a different world…party-crashing her high-society wedding rehearsal and upending her carefully-constructed plans with wild debauchery and mayhem. If that weren’t enough, as prudish Emily’s horns continue to grow, so do new…feelings.

“This show celebrates real ancient Greek traditions, such as having a ‘Satyr Play’ as comic relief after the many heavy Greek tragedies in their theater festivals,” said Katherine, an actress, singer, playwright and screenwriter who is celebrating her fifth consecutive Fringe. “I’m particularly excited about my entry this year as I feel it connects right to the spirit of Fringe!”

Katherine’s favorite writing style is always firmly rooted in historical research, and Horny is no exception. She hopes to entertain audiences with a wickedly fun sex comedy––precisely what satyr plays were for ancient Greek audiences. In fact, while developing the play, she was delighted to discover that our word “satire” comes directly from “satyr.” Playful satyr plays poked fun at sexual social mores and the upper class and were paired with heavy tragedies in theater festivals to bring levity and comic relief.

Horny aims to continue the age-old tradition of both celebrating and poking fun at over-the-top male sexuality, while also bringing an oft-unexplored concept in scriptwriting: empowered ageless female sexuality. In this way Katherine hopes to add to the artistic conversation of one of today’s hottest topics, as captured in the #metoo and #timesup movements, through one of the historically best methods of bringing social issues to light…satire!

“I want the audience to have a lot of laughs and fun, of course,” she said. “I’m also striving to highlight that by being a part of a theater festival, we are participating in a tradition that goes back to ancient times.”
