Acclaimed stage director and TV producer Curtis Krick presents a World Premiere sci-fi comedy at Hollywood Fringe that mixes “Doctor Who” with “Monty Python” and a little Tom Stoppard.

LOS ANGELES – When industry multi-hyphenate Curtis Krick wanted to get audiences to examine how humanity is irreversibly ruining our environment, all the mistakes we’ve made and our slow march on the path to imminent destruction, he wondered how he could do so without seriously depressing them. The answer is Moose & Darlene’s Cosmic Do-Over making its World Premiere at studio/stage this June as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

In Moose & Darlene’s Cosmic Do-Over, Moose finds his insignificant little life––and the fate of the planet––forever changed by the arrival of the mysterious Darlene. Together they set off on an adventure across time in a desperate effort to avert catastrophic climate collapse. Will Darlene fulfill her mission to keep humans from burning out the planet? Or will her sibling rivalry with her younger sister Becky get in the way? Will Moose ever find love? Or will he be the key to destroying all of humanity? Will Eratosthenes of Cyrene accurately calculate the circumference of the Earth? Will Charles Babbage ever build the Difference Engine? What did John William Mauchly really do the night he graduated Johns Hopkins? This world premiere by Krick pays homage to Doctor Who and Star Trek while tackling some serious mind-bending world issues…with jokes.

“The idea for a time travel story that hopscotches across history in a crazy effort to isolate and eliminate technological evolutionary missteps first occurred to me years ago,” Krick said. “With every passing year of inaction and partisan political debate, the urgency to write and produce this play grew. But I knew it needed to be funny or it would be a complete turn off. Now we’ve put together the right people in the right circumstances to do the show right. It’s going to be a blast.”

Krick most recently directed a highly successful, post-apocalyptic version of Macbeth last fall, as well as co-directing the original one-man show Dramatis Personae at the 2014 Fringe––a production audiences called “an inventive and brilliant emotional rollercoaster.” A former associate producer for popular TV shows The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Krick is also an Emmy-nominated visual effects producer, beyond being a prolific writer, director and producer for the stage. For Moose & Darlene’s Cosmic Do-Over, he has brought in some top-tiered talent, including Edinburgh and Hollywood Fringe veteran Dawn Alden, and comedy and improv pros Aliza Pearl and Josh Covitt. Plus, the team has award-winner Matt Hill on board to design the set and video components of this simple but ambitious Fringe production.

Krick is excited to see how Fringe audiences respond to the show, especially as he and his team contemplate future productions and perhaps even the possibility of developing it into an animated series. While the show definitely has the clever but ridiculous whimsy of a Monty Python piece, it does also tackle some very sobering issues.

“This play will make people laugh,” Krick said. “There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot to surprise and delight. There’s enough actual history to elevate and educate. And there are serious issues to consider. Namely, if we are truly on a path of self-destruction, how can we avoid it? Does technology, in the hands of humans, inevitably lead to this path of ruin? If not, what can we do? What are we willing to do?”
