FORT HUACHUCA: A TALE OF SISTERHOOD, PATRIOTISM, RACE, AND LOVE

Fort Huachuca

view project

A debut production, written by emerging actress and playwright Ailema Sousa.

Set in Arizona on an army base camp. The play focuses on the
contributions and sacrifices made by the African-American women’s army auxiliary corps (WAAC’s) during the Second World War. A concept created two years ago after failing to find a film or play about World War Two which featured Black women playing central or supporting characters in a narrative. They were non-existent.

With the success of stories and films such as ‘Hidden Figures’ and more recently ‘Black Panther’ a story like ‘Fort Huachuca’ is needed now more than ever. Their success suggests that people want to see a different narrative, they want to see themselves reflected on screen and on stage. Ailema and the rest of the cast (Natalia Elizabeth, Nicole Sousa, Ashlee Jones, Benjamin Colbourne, Charles Nkrumah Jr, Resheda Terry, and Tiera Dashae with voiceovers by Kandace Caine & Kenneth Shook) will perform at the OMR Theatre @The Complex Hollywood on Santa Monica Blvd, here in Los Angeles for the Festival in June.

Next Up Talent CEO: Elizabeth Alabi on Fort Huachuca “This story is part of a history that has not been told, it is an important piece of all our history that must be brought to the light and I am very excited about the future of this piece”.
