When has a joke gone too far? Probably when it’s endorsed by Osama bin Laden.

In 2008, Irish stand-up Abie Philbin Bowman wrote a comedy about reducing carbon emissions… by joining Al Qaeda.

Bowman told audiences: “the major causes of climate change are airlines, oil companies and overpopulation. Al Qaeda is tackling all three”.

The resulting one-man show, entitled Eco-Friendly Jihad, sold out in his native Ireland, and at the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It was billed as “Al Qaeda meets Al Gore”.

But earlier this year, Bowman was shocked to find his joke had been taken seriously by the world’s number one terrorist. Al Jazeera reported that a new bin Laden audiotape blamed the US for climate change.

In the recording, Bin Laden called on the world to “stop consuming American products” and “refrain from using the dollar”, in a bid to reduce emissions.

But Bowman’s horror quickly turned to relief. “I realised, if the worst Al Qaeda can do is steal ideas from infidel Irish comedians, they’re losing the War on Terror.”

When Eco-Friendly Jihad comes to the Hollywood Fringe this month, it will be billed as ’the Comedy Show Bin Laden Took Seriously".

And Bowman will be sure to mock the terrorists’ double standards. “If Al Qaeda wants to reduce carbon emissions, they really need to stop bombing public transport.”
