Heart of Golden Tar

An artistic deep dive into an emotional experience we can all relate to--lost love. Drew's metaphor of navigating a literal heart to process a break-up was both clever and poignant. ... full review

Such a fun ride! A complete breath of fresh air in between all the heavy shows one usually sees at a fringe festival. This show will brighten anyone's day.... full review

A clever and entertaining show that will have you laughing as you learn new things about old terms you've probably been using for years, but never really knew what they meant. ... full review

The Toughest Man In Chicago

A topnotch portrayal of a 20th century journalistic icon, Mitchell Bishop does a fantastic job of embodying the very essence of Chicago columnist Mike Royko, to the point that you forget you're watching a performance. On top of that, the development, writing, and pacing of this show keep you engaged from beginning to end.... full review

"We Are Traffic: An UBER Adventure 2022"

A well-told funny, personal story that is immediately relatable to anyone who has ever driven, or even ridden in, an Uber, Lyft, or any ride share situation. Jonathan cleverly weaves together his own life's journey around his three-year stint as an Uber/Lyft driver in the early years of the app. Thoroughly entertaining, I laughed throughout, and in some poignant moments, even got a little choked up.... full review

MR. MALCOLM'S MUSIC FACTORY

How refreshing to see a family show at the Hollywood Fringe that is not only nicely performed by a talented cast of pro puppeteers, but also has a well-written story with a great message for both kids and adults. It's a testament to the show that it appeared to be sold out on a Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. I highly recommend this to everyone, not just for kids, but people in general, ages four to 100. Although I love all types of genres and stories at the Hollywood Fringe, I must say this was a... full review

GIDEON & THE BLUNDERSNORP

This is one of the best, most professionally done HFF shows I've seen. The production design is so visually creative, that it rivals what you'd see Off-Broadway. The acting is topnotch and engaging; the direction makes elegant use of the small space to give a sense of expanse terrain; and the writing is quick-witted, with clever double entendres that both entertain adults and amuse children. Like a Pixar movie this show's story is family-friendly without talking down to the audience. And it has a... full review

No Matter Watt - The Musical!

stacy dymalski · August 11, 2021 certified reviewer
Although I think this was an ambitious attempt at a musical with a powerful message, it could've packed an even more powerful punch if the story arc were more well-developed. The connective tissue between the musical numbers is not there, which leaves the viewer with questions in terms of character motivation and story flow. Right now this feels like a work-in-progress. The lyrics in the musical numbers gives us some insight, but I would love to see this again after a rewrite that brings out more... full review

Experiencing Love on The Spectrum

stacy dymalski · August 11, 2021 certified reviewer
George does a great job of authentically sharing the highs and lows of the emergence of his love life, all while factoring in being gay and on the autism spectrum. He is thoroughly himself on stage, and has a refreshing perspective. His stories are relatable, even if you're not male, gay, or on the autism spectrum, because let's face it, love is love, no matter who you are. ... full review

She Stoops to Scandal

If you like Jane Austen, "Downton Abbey," or "Bridgerton," but with an extra slice of sly humor thrown in, you will love "She Stoops to Scandal." Brilliantly written, authentically performed, and smartly directed, this is a refreshing sidestep from the traditional, memoir-style solo show. Instead, playwright Chambers Stevens gives us fictional character, Grace, and lets her recount how she outsmarts an unexpected scandal during the Regency period in which she lives. The overall message is great (... full review
