Ain't That America

At first glance this show prepares you for an easy liberal win at the expense of redneck archetypes well crafted by the writer director team. However it evolves into a much more thorough analysis of why and how right wing extremeists operate. Luckily, the writer is Mississippi based so his dialogue was fresh, inviting, and hauntingly poetic. The audience is pulled into this awkward coming of rage for a white lonely millennial on the brink of ‘giving in’ to the point where the audience starts to s... full review

Alexa, Turn Off Heartbreak

Shows like this are open doors as far as potential is concerned and given more time with potentially different venues it’s safe to say this duo could do well keeping this style alive. With tones shifting from vaudeville, standup, skit, and some genuine moments, most people are going to find solace somewhere throughout this hour of comedy. Both these women are stage comfy and I think are ready to dive into some of the material. With duos, especially comedic duos, they could benefit from adherei... full review

Foxhole Stories: Twist, Pull, Smoke, Run-Motherfucker-Run!

Twist, Pull, Smoke, Run-Motherfucker- Run is this generations Tracers and may be one of my favorite pieces of theatre. What starts off as a cute metropolitan take on the ‘soldier-back-home’ narrative is given resonant tension with the addition of a non-verbal military presence sitting in on the scene. Director Chris Game deserves ample applause for building tension throughout the entire piece leading to a climax that reinvigorates the medium. When the non-verbal marine (played by Brock Joseph... full review

God: The Apologies Tour

The irony and meta-comedy mulling around this experience is astounding and one can’t helped but be intrigued. Whether you enjoy the sheer absurdity of someone claiming to be God and speaking for him, or whether that absurdity lies within the allegory for what religion in a sense ‘is’; other people claiming to know and or be gods/prophets themselves it hits both well. Not sure what Blair truly intended on a spiritual level but that might be what works best, he doesn’t seem to have an opinion. Re... full review

The Importance of Being Oscar

dan sugimoto · June 05, 2018 certified reviewer
Brandie June has considerable talent as a writer and with solid directing this piece satisfies in the ways it wants/needs to. That being said it’s vignette like approach leaves little to the full development of a narrative worthy of Oscar Wilde, with two acts and more focus on the fascinating love triangle presented with the last two scenes, this piece could reach higher levels of the historic fantasy genre so desperately in need of another ‘Genuis writer meets character’ plot line. June is obvi... full review

Cat Cam Catharsis

Cat Cam Catharsis politely dabbles into the fascinating battleground of American superficiality and the selfish archetypes that spend more time thinking and much less time extracting real genuine compassion for each other. Underneath some shaking mildly coordinated use of space, the dialogue and characters shine in the moments where the group clicks. I will probably return cause I’d like to get a second go around with some of the material. ... full review

Sex and the Musical

Wiley seems completely in her element with this piece and has hit her musical stride with Sex In The Musical. Musically she delivers her finest material, both in melodic execution and placement within the world of the popular show. Knowing Wiley’s previous material, it’s refreshing to hear how smart of a musician she really is. Credit due to her arranger Sandy Chao Wang for grasping what makes this genre work. Casting wise you won’t find a better quartet to helm these iconic characters and I ... full review
