John is a master of storytelling, dance, and movement, and he's in his element in this show. You'll be hard pressed to find another solo show of this caliber at the fringe festival - or anywhere else.... full review

Shakespeare's Last Night Out (or What? YOU, Will??)

alex knox · June 11, 2015 certified reviewer
From my first fringe experience a couple years ago, I've admired Michael Shaw Fisher's work. His rock musicals are always smart, biting, hilarious, brutal, and beautiful. With this show, he's gone above and beyond. (He also happens to be an all around awesome guy, who embodies the generous, artist-community spirit of the fringe festival.) Few people could pull off a one-man musical about William Shakespeare, but Michael is the perfect man for the job. A scribe himself, he knows the agony and the ... full review

Much like the length of string that winds around the intimate stage during the course of the performance, this show is taut, delicately crafted, refreshingly non-linear, and yet all connected. Leslie's frustration with the world's obsession with being happy particularly resonated with me. Leslie brings a warmth to her performance and is delightfully charming, even as she reveals her struggles and goes to dangerous places. Director Rebecca Hengstenberg deserves credit for keeping the show floating... full review

Fancy: Secrets from my Bootydoir

alex knox · June 16, 2014 certified reviewer
I had the pleasure of meeting Chris Farah back in 2011 in a one-person show class in downtown LA. Back then, Fancy was just being born. Now she has bloomed into a grown-ass woman - one who is a genius at taking over a theater and winning your heart. Seriously, folks - this is one of the shows to make time for. Get to the Three of Clubs early, and grab a cold beverage to sip. Then go inside and relish Fancy's witty banter, soulful songs, and an entirely improvised section where she answers questio... full review

Jesus H: A Solo Play for the Zealot in all of Us

alex knox · June 14, 2014 certified reviewer
Mariah Freda is a breath of fresh air. From the moment the lights come up, she captivates the theatre with an electric stage presence - you can feel that she genuinely wants to connect with each person in the audience. Though the subject matter deals with religion, cultural identity, and anxiety, Mariah keeps the show light and breezy as she deftly navigates a quick-witted script filled with colorful characters. Solo shows like this frequently come off like a series of caricatures, but Mariah avo... full review

The Wake

For over a year I've waited to see Ben Moroski in action. I'd heard rave reviews of his previous solo show, so when I heard about THE WAKE, I knew I couldn't miss it. I expected Ben to be engaging - he was. I expected the show to surprise me - it did. What I didn't expect was to find myself slipping into the reality of a character that I never would have thought I could relate to. In the intimate space of the Elephant Studio, Ben's character tells the audience that's he found something "unconditi... full review

Ceremony

alex knox · July 02, 2013 certified reviewer
"Ceremony" is a live theater experience like no other. Rarely have I felt so completely transported to another place, living in the moment, right there with the performer. How does Michael Kass do it? Partly, it's director Diana Wyenn's economical, sparse staging. It's also Martin Carrillo's sound design, which subtly but vividly bring to life the aural environment of a Peruvian shamanic village. But mostly, it's Michael himself - his ability to bring the audience in with a natural ease and famil... full review

The Real Housekeepers of Studio City

alex knox · July 02, 2013 certified reviewer
Another reviewer compared this show to a bite sized candy bar, and I am having trouble thinking of a better metaphor. In fact, I'll take the metaphor further, because a fringe festival is kind of like going Trick-or-Treating on Halloween. You go door to door, not sure what to expect, hoping for something surprising and delightful. "The Real Housekeepers of Studio City" is just that. The show is like a fun size bag of Skittles: filled with colorful morsels, each one more pleasing than the last. It... full review
