Adapting Greek Myth and Euripides' Medea and using Japanese Butoh dance , Yokko brings the spirit of Medea alive. This fusion of Eastern dance and Western drama invites the audience inside Medea’s dark, desperate struggle. Trapped in the underworld, she is forever cursed to relive her tragic life.

The Ume Group, hailed by New York critics for its “commanding, physically impressive performances” (The Village Voice) makes its West Coast debut. Using Japanese butoh, yoga, & gymnastics, two dancers present a raw and profound view of what it means to be “fallen” “risen” and “one” with everything.

A young Japanese woman discovers her father's love for her only after she loses her hair and skin. Nearly a dozen characters are brought to life in this revealing, fearless and funny journey of survival and the power of dream.

Drawing on their diverse work in butoh, gymnastics, yoga, suzuki, martial arts, and traditional Japanese dance, members of The Ume Group Ensemble will lead trainees through rigorous physical exercise integrated with a playful storytelling practice.

In this 30 hour, week-long intensive participants will engage tools from Butoh Dance and European Physical Theatre traditions to expand their expressive capacity, deepen in the mystery of being, and create an original performance, which will be showcased at a public performance on June 13.
