DIVERSITY IN AMERICAN THEATRE AWARD

Description
The purpose of the award is to highlight the ever growing diversity in the ethnic and cultural make up of American society. Now more than ever, We must use our art as a way to identify our similarities instead of our differences. The Diversity in American Theatre Award is an acknowledgement and reflection of what is means to be American in the 21st Century, regardless of race, lifestyle identity, national origin, religious beliefs, or political affiliation. The award will be given to the show/individual who embodies the spirit of American Diversity in Theatre.
Urban Theatre Movement is a 501©3 Non-profit organization committed to producing work that reflects the communities that we live and serve.
Qualifications
A show or individual must meet the 6 of 10 of the following criteria:
- A minimum of 70% of the project members (actors, producers, directors, designers, etc) must be made up of people that identify as POC, LGBTQ, Minority, Women, or people from Non-Traditional families (i.e. single parent families, families with non parents, same sex parents, foster families, etc.)
- The project should provide a fresh perspective on what it means to be “American in the 21st Century”. By embodying the ideal that America is the melting pot of the World. The project should make the effort to show the viewer different sides to being an American.
- The project must demonstrate a fusion of American values, coupled with unique cultural and ethnic beliefs (when appropriate), to give the audience insight into the projects’ perspective of American Life.
- The award is open to Any project that provides depictions of life in the Americas (North, Central, & South) by featuring stories and characters from the Western American Region.
- The project must be an original piece of work that may have been produced, but not published before.
- The project is a Fringe World Premiere
- The Writer(s) is/are POC, LGBTQ, Minority, Women
- The Director(s) is/are POC, LGBTQ, Minority, Women
- The lead actor(s) is/are POC, LGBTQ, Minority, Women
- The project tackles issues such as Black Lives Matter, DAPL, Immigration, Gender, Womens Rights, and other current relevant social issues affecting American life today.
Methodology
In order for a project to qualify for consideration, it must meet 6 of the 10 criteria points listed.
The nominees will be judged by our company board, using a cumulative point system based on the following:
- Originality
- Acting
- Writing
- Directing
- Relevance
- Style
- Creativity
- Informative
- Design
- Message
Reward
Urban Theatre Movement will provide a plaque or statuette with personalized inscription for the winning project.
