THE SPIRIT OF THE FRINGE, NEVER IN A BOX AWARD

Sponsored by Lumpy-Cramp(c) Productions, Motor City Fringe Festival

Description

This award is awarded to an original production that embodies the original idea of the “fringe.” To be on the fringe of normalcy means a production that is brave, exciting, risk-taking, and “never in a box.” This winner will be the most fringiest, most daring, and most compelling show at the festival. Past winners included, a mime/clown duet who seeked flight even though they had no plane, an interactive ensemble that did all they could to “get to know you,” an entrancing holiday children’s song that continuously hit you over the head with the idea of owning a hippopotamus, and a behind the scenes look at one of today’s most loved theme parks. Who will be next?

Qualifications

The production must be an original production. Simply put, an original production is a production that has never been produced, or has not had a commercial release at a LORT, Regional, Off-Broadway, or Broadway Theatre. Must also have not been produced in the state of California or on the West Coast.

Producers must send an email of interest and create the code LUMPY to all shows so that the award team can fit the show into its schedule.

Priority goes to productions that feature diverse playwrights, producers, actors, themes, directors and content.

Methodology

After the email is received and the
LUMPY code is created, a member from the Lumpy-Cramp team will arrange a time to attend the production.

Following the production the team member will then discuss the show with the rest of the staff. A list of semi-finalist will then be created and interviews will be arranged with the producers to learn about the creative process.

A winner will be decided from the list of finalist after all interviews have been completed.

While personal interviews are not required to win, these interviews aid in selecting a winner in a significant way, and are highly recommended.

Reward

The award will be a small take-home trophy for the winning production, the production’s name will appear on the permanent trophy for the award, and will appear alongside the past award winners.

NEW THIS YEAR: The winner will also receive registration fees, and assistance with lodging to participate in the Motor City Fringe Festival in Detroit Michigan, July 14-28th 2019. Also support and mentoring to return the show to HFF 2018. Show sustainability is important in order to prepare for MCFF 2019.

All finalist will be invited to participate in the MCFF 2019 and will receive a registration scholarship of 50 percent off of registration to produce at the small venue.
