“When did you come out of the closet?” is a question I’ve always had a difficult time answering. My “coming out story” is actually many stories, over many years. On a family vacation at the age of 4 I stole my cousin’s yellow jelly shoes, which were all the rage in the 80s! I put them on and refused to take them off the entire trip. That was the first time I came out! Over the next 25 years I painfully and very slowly inched my way out, until I couldn’t take it anymore. At the age of 29 the time had finally come to fully walk out and slam that door shut. I sat down and wrote a thoughtful, funny, slightly dramatic, and very vulnerable coming out letter. I took the subway to the post office in downtown Brooklyn and mailed about a dozen letters to everyone in my extended family I hadn’t come out to yet. Watching the letters slide down the chute, no longer in my possession, felt like an eternity. They were two of the most thrilling and horrifying seconds of my life. Now I had to wait. All weekend. This show is about the responses I received after THE LETTER. It’s about all the responses I’ve received throughout my life. It’s about stories from the closet, which should actually be called a prison cell. It’s about what gave me the courage to inch out a little further each time I did, and then finally come out once and for all. But as I relive these stories, an even bigger question emerges. Do we ever really stop coming out?
