What I liked

Important story. The performers were both charming and sincere. The humor helped us understand how they were able to get through some of their real life difficult moments.

What I didn't like

Of course this was a preview so… There were some tech problems but the performers rolled with it and included us in the “gag” when there were a few technical glitches. It was a full house, the audience laughed at all the funny parts, and gasped at “gaspable” moments. We were all along for the ride. If I were to give any “notes” I would say that as an audience member I would connect more to the story if they also would relax into their story and connect more to their own emotions in the telling of the story. The piece is solid and hopefully preview night will help the performers to relax and soar and connect more once the run begins next week.

My overall impression

I attended the preview night performance of “My Trans Wife”! It is a compelling auto-biographical “story form” presentation of the life and relationship of a married couple, Mimi and Mara, who are married in real life. You get the picture from the title…two women, one is trans and the other is not. You think you’ve got it rough with your spotty cell phone service, computer problems, and bad LA traffic!? Try being in the shoes of these two women! We all should be listening to and learning from these kinds of real life stories. Despite difficulties and obstacles, which they continue to face, this is a real love story and that’s what shines through. There are some cute little directorial things and I won’t ruin your fun by disclosing them to you, but they added some great texture to this two woman show. The run time for the show was 60 minutes and to be honest it was over before I knew it. I hope that they continue to develop and explore how they can do a longer version of the show in the future. It has the bones necessary to do that! And I must repeat… this is such a very important story. Love is love!
