Alana has been living her life with the utmost ambivalence. When her difficult and estranged mother dies, she is forced to adopt Gigi, the finicky cat her mother left behind. Alana’s alcoholic brother, Erik, continues to make things difficult for Alana by demanding her availability to help sell their mother’s house and deal with other logistics, but Alana doesn’t have the drive. Things turn up when she gets asked out by her coworker and longtime crush, Sam, but Erik nearly ruins the opportunity when he shows up unannounced and drunk. Gigi, adjusting to her new space, gets sick and Alana and Sam have to make an emergency trip to the vet. As Alana learns to care for Gigi, she finds patience and compassion for herself and her late mother, and is able to move forward with her life.
